This book traces Jacksonville’s rise to become the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States, using images of key moments in its history. After World War II, rapid sprawl left the city with a shrinking tax base, schools that lost accreditation, and corruption scandals. Voters responded by approving consolidation with Duval County, creating the Bold New City of the South, a decision that has shaped this Southern metropolis into the 21st century.
