Behind the Vouchers: How Neighborly Gifts Supports Local Restaurants and Builds Community

What’s this really all about, you might ask?
Let me give you a personal perspective:
“It was such a great experience and engagement opportunity in this new community I now call home.”
That kind of experience is something every city needs—something that fosters love, joy, hope, and genuine connection.
When I first discovered Neighborly Group, I learned it’s a community-centered agency working to elevate small businesses, local brands, and gifting experiences that reflect the heart of the neighborhoods they serve. Under the Neighborly umbrella, you’ll find everything from brand strategy and creative storytelling to custom gift boxes and exclusive online storefronts.
Coming from Raleigh, NC—a major city and the 2025 “Best Performing Large City” named by the Milken Institute—I’ve seen what it’s like to live in a fast-growing place. While Raleigh hits many marks, it’s also missed some important ones, particularly around affordability, community connection, and sustainability. Growth, without intention, can erode the very soul of a place.
But here in Rochester, MN, it’s different. There’s an intentional effort to preserve and build community, and Neighborly Group is a beautiful example of that. Since moving here, I’ve come to love how Rochester balances just enough city and just enough country. I’ve met people from all walks of life—people doing purposeful work, from surgeons to restaurant owners, volunteers to artists. Everyone contributes in their own way, and that’s what makes this place feel like home.
Recently, I visited a local gem called Townie’s Grill for the first time using a Neighborly Gifts restaurant voucher. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly by DJ—a vibrant and welcoming presence who clearly loves what he does. He walked us through the menu, offered great recommendations, and explained how the Neighborly program works.
Once the food came out—especially “The Uptowner”—I understood the buzz. It was hot, flavorful, and made with care. DJ even came back to check on us, making sure everything was to our liking. As a self-proclaimed foodie, I can tell you: Townie’s passed the test. In fact, I went back the next day. (Shhh… that’s our little secret!)
When I asked about the program, DJ shared that the Neighborly Gifts partnership has brought in new customers and created fresh opportunities to showcase what Townie’s does best. The team there is fully engaged and excited about where this collaboration could lead. It’s a powerful example of how small businesses thrive when given the right platform and community support.
Townie’s is a place with good service, great energy, and fantastic food.
